Background:
A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Its paramount political problem continues to be the relationship of the province of Quebec, with its French-speaking residents and unique culture, to the remainder of the country.

243,791 km

Geography - note:
second-largest country in world (after Russia); strategic location between Russia and US via north polar route; approximately 85% of the population is concentrated within 300 km of the US/Canada border.

The first LETSystem has been operating since 1983.

Was designed and developed in 1982 by Michael Linton.

Currently the original system is dormant, soon to be revived. However, there is a community way program using smart cards with about 25 businesses some of which are retailers.

We use Green Dollars ($Gr) which are on par with Canadian dollars and have just switched to a new data-base called T-LETS, which is Access-based and available from The MadNetter c/o K-W Barterworks.
The Peterborough LETS in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, is located in a city of about 76,000. Peterborough is located about 1.5 hrs north east of Toronto, Ontario. Founded in 1994, The Peterborough LETS Exchange now has its' directory on the internet. Our current membership consists of over 70 members.
